We investigate hypotheses about dynamic processes in these behaviors during early adulthood in order to shed light on persisting racial differences in rates of unintended pregnancies in the United States. We find that net of other sociodemographic characteristics and adolescent experiences with sex and pregnancy, black women spent less time in relationships and had sex less frequently in their relationships than white women, but did not differ in the number of relationships they formed or in their frequency or consistency of contraceptive use within relationships. Black women were more likely to use less effective methods for pregnancy prevention e. And although the most effective method for pregnancy prevention—long-acting reversible contraception LARC —was used more often by black women than white women, LARC use was low in both groups.

White Women, Black Men | Yale University Press

This is a great book for those interested in African American history, women's studies, the Civil War, or the history of race relations in the U. A brilliant work, imaginatively researched and well written. Highly recommended. An enthralling book. We are now most fortunate in having Hodes's very original, revealing, and important book on a neglected subject. It deserves a close and respectful reading, and many readers. On one level it is a wide-ranging and carefully researched exploration of a subject ignored by scholars of the South for too long, namely sexual relationships between black men and white women.

Black-White Differences in Sex and Contraceptive Use Among Young Women

Martha Hodes tells a series of stories about such liaisons in the years before the Civil War, explores the complex ways in which white Southerners tolerated them in the slave South, and shows how and why these responses changed with emancipation. Hodes provides details of the wedding of a white servant-woman and a slave man in , an antebellum rape accusation that uncovered a relationship between an unmarried white woman and a slave, and a divorce plea from a white farmer based on an adulterous affair between his wife and a neighborhood slave. Only with the advent of black freedom did the issue move beyond neighborhood dramas and into the arena of politics, becoming a much more serious taboo than it had ever been before. Hodes gives vivid examples of the violence that followed the upheaval of war, when black men and white women were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan and unprecedented white rage and terrorism against such liaisons began to erupt. An era of terror and lynchings was inaugurated, and the legacy of these sexual politics lingered well into the twentieth century.

No one questioned its history, which everyone knew began with the advent of African slavery in the New World. Or so we thought.
